Whispers is one of the more upmarket coffee bars in Durham city centre, and for this reason, it attracts office workers at lunch times, so can be busy for several hours every day. Despite this, the staff are well-organised and the queues are kept to a minimum, and tables are wiped down quickly after customers have left.
It's a good size and has plenty of space between tables, so pushchairs and wheelchairs are able to move between the aisles.
Glass windows allow people to 'people watch', and everyone is always very friendly.
The coffee and other drinks, and snacks such as pies and cakes are tasty and are served hot. -

Went there 01 February 2016 with wife. She asked for two well done crumpets. Some 22 minutes later, two practically raw crumpets were presented to her which were totally inedible. Although we received a refund, the staff (who were clearly more interested in chatting with each other than providing a service) were unconcerned and unapologetic.
There were only five customers in the cafe and the staff had clearly forgotten that there was an order for crumpets. We would have had more respect for the staff if they had owned up to having forgotten my wife's order. We will never go back there again, as our customer journey was not a good one. -

Whispers has a comfortable environment and is often sought to by those who are travelling from/towards the bus station and train station as it is conveniently near. The location being in the Reform Place allows Whispers Coffee Lounge to be slightly out of the way and more peaceful for customers.
